Mexico visa: exemptions, the FMM & requirements in 2026
Last reviewed 12 July 2026 · Source: Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM)Most travellers do not need a visa for Mexico. Citizens of the US, Canada, the EU, UK and dozens of other countries enter visa-free for tourism. Even many nationalities that would need a visa can skip it thanks to Mexico’s US-visa exemption rule. What everyone needs is the FMM entry permit. This guide explains who needs a visa, the exemptions, and how the FMM works.

Do you need a visa?
- Visa-exempt nationalities — the US, Canada, all EU/Schengen countries, the UK, Japan, Australia, and many Latin American and other nations can visit for tourism for up to 180 days without a visa.
- US-visa exemption — if your nationality normally needs a Mexican visa, you can still enter visa-free for tourism if you hold a valid US visa, or permanent residence in the US, Canada, Japan, the UK or a Schengen country.
- Everyone else — must apply for a Mexican visitor visa at a consulate; some nationalities can use the electronic authorisation system where available.
The FMM entry permit
The FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) is Mexico’s tourist entry record. At major airports the process has been digitised — officers scan your passport and stamp the permitted number of days directly, so there may be no paper card. The number of days is at the officer’s discretion (up to 180), so ask for the full period you need and check the stamp before leaving the counter. At some land borders you still fill in an FMM and pay a fee if staying beyond a short cross-border zone or period.
Requirements for visa-free entry
- A passport valid for the duration of your stay.
- Proof of onward or return travel.
- Evidence of accommodation and sufficient funds (may be checked).
- For the US-visa exemption: your valid US visa in your passport.
Frequently asked questions
Do US and EU citizens need a visa?
No. They enter visa-free for tourism for up to 180 days, subject to the officer’s stamp.
Can I use a US visa to enter Mexico?
Yes. A valid US visa lets otherwise visa-required nationals enter visa-free for tourism.
Is there still a paper FMM?
At many airports it’s now a passport stamp rather than a card. At land borders a paper FMM and fee may still apply.

Up to 180 days, but the officer decides the exact number — check your stamp.
Can I work on a tourist entry?
No. Tourist entry does not permit employment. Work needs the appropriate visa.
